White Grape Varieties
Avesso
The queen grape variety of the Douro Valley sub-region of Baião, this variety needs warmer climates and protection from the Atlantic influence.
This grape variety is characterized by producing full-bodied and deep wines with very fruity aromas, such as peach, orange, and pineapple, and complex and harmonious flavors with almond notes. The combination of ripeness and acidity guarantees good longevity.
Arinto
Grown throughout the region also known as Pedernã, this is one of the oldest and most versatile white grape varieties in Portugal.
It stands out for its quality citrus fruit, sometimes with notes of green apple and orange blossom, and for its robust acidic structure, resulting in expressive, intense and long-lived wines.
Alvarinho
The most emblematic grape variety of the Vinho Verde region, with its hot and dry summer climate, this variety offers characteristics that result in excellent wines, highly valued for their expressiveness, personality and enormous longevity, capable of developing in the bottle for several years.
Alvarinho wines are extremely balanced and structured, ranging from citrusy to tropical; it is this remarkable versatility that makes it one of the most widely used grape varieties in this region today.
Loureiro
This grape variety has been known since the 18th century, giving rise to aromatic wines focused on citrus and floral notes, resulting in delicate and crisp wines, sometimes excellent for aging.
Trajadura
This grape variety is mainly used in blends with other grape varieties, is distributed throughout the Vinho Verde region, and ages well without being overly expressive, with some notes of peach, pear, banana, and ripe apple. It produces full-bodied wines with moderate acidity.
Fernão Pires
It is a versatile grape variety, typically with floral and fruity aromas, and produces wines with a higher alcohol content and low acidity.
These wines typically exhibit a certain structure and complexity, which can be good for aging but at the same time makes it an excellent grape variety for younger wines.
